Order new custom fin designs

These designs represent most of the new designs we are currently working on.

This page showcases several innovative new designs meticulously crafted and tested this winter in preparation for production.

As with our new designs, these are offered for ordering as custom fins for those adventurous early adopters. We have already created many of these designs, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

The canard designs featured on this page are offered with a single tab for DUAL TAB systems. This accommodates the many twinzers setups that employ a single box for the canard.

There are no new center fin designs among these templates so that we will recommend center fins from our HANALEI FINS range where appropriate. However, a number of the BW and NRG templates could be made as center fins, if needed.

GR8 Series

As is often the case when a new surf season rolls around in Hawai'i, we start looking at new fin designs.

We wanted to investigate a higher-aspect ratio fin design that optimized lift generation. The BLENDED-WING concept takes the profile of the fin and bends it at roughly the halfway mark, creating two distinct facets to the fin.

Introducing the GR8 (great) design! This setup features the GR8-613BW (6 1/8”) main fin and the GR8-338 back fin. You’ll notice we’ve chosen a much larger (taller) main fin to boost lift generation. To balance this, we’ve included a smaller back fin, which helps keep the turning smooth while adding some extra power. Also, the back fin’s design makes it pretty flexible in terms of placement. While we still recommend a tight fin cluster for this setup.

The design of the main fin was driven by the goal of making it an excellent choice for a twin fin. This drove the need to balance the design between turning ability, drive, and projection. The design also features a "base forward" design, which means as the fin gets larger, the base stays pinned at the back of the base. This results in the fin's center of effort moving forward as its size increases, helping keep the template balanced with the box placement.

CNRD Series

Over the winter, we have been refining the designs for this range of canard fins.

These are unique designs that all feature our BLENDED-WING tech. This feature allows a canard with more cant in the tip without needing to be added to the base, allowing the fin to be loose and responsive.

They are offered with all of our standard bases. For a DUAL TAB base, only a single tab is used.

All of these fins feature our HOLOFOILS on the inside faces for improved performance.

BW Series

This brand-new design utilizes our BLENDED-WING tech to deliver a fin with remarkable performance.

We developed the canard fins and designed a matching set of main fins. Like the CNRD series, these fins leverage the BLENDED-WING design concept to deliver a superb fin design, introducing the – BW series.

The design was driven by the BLENDED-WING concept and the desire to create a fin with a more balanced profile and area. Power was the main objective, as we already knew the BLENDED-WING would enhance the performance. The fins also feature a base forward design, so as the size increased, the center for the fin moved forward, enhancing the turning ability. The design has a good rake to improve projection out of turns. The outline features a more prominent trailing edge tip to enhance the fin's feel.

HOLOFOILS are featured on the inside face and are significantly enhanced due to the BLENDED-WING. The foil runs out through the tip of the blade. The outline also features a cutaway at the bottom of the trailing edge to further enhance the turning ability.

Due to the shape of the tip, there is more flex than a fin without the bend.

Although this series doesn’t have a dedicated center fin, any of the templates in the series can also be used as a center.

The smaller sizes in the series are intended to be used as back fins in quad setups or as front fins in reverse quads.

NRG Series

The NRG series is an eight-year-old design that we decided to resurrect as it has great potential as a twin fin.

The overall shape features a deep cutaway to keep the fin maneuverable and a large blade for lots of drive. The new versions have had the foils enhanced for improved performance.

The size range has also been increased to cover a much broader range of functionality. The two largest fins in this series are incredible twin fins. Their design uses a base-back focus, which means the center of the area of the fin moves back as the size increases. This means these fins can be ridden further forward on the board for improved turning performance.

The smallest fin in the range is intended to be used as a canard or trailing center fin when coupled with the larger twin fin sizes.

Interestingly, regardless of the size of the fins, all of the bases are the same length - 2 7/8" [73 mm].

These fins do not feature much flex as they are intended to be highly responsive, what little flex they have is more torsional than vertical.

We are really excited to have these fins return to our range.

VTX Series

The VTX series is a design we have been working on for over a year, with extensive testing.

This new design is a high-performance fin that handles various conditions. It leverages our BLENDED-WING concept and a few of our newer designs. The use of this concept takes the fin's performance to another level.

The bend on the fin occurs just below the upper blade, allowing the blade to power the fin out of a turn. The bend also thins out the tip of the fin, allowing it to get more flex, which is both vertical and torsional. The larger fins feature a lot of rake, significantly improving the projection these fins get out of turns. This enables them to handle big surf well; this projection is handy under those conditions.

The fin's body is almost parallel in outline, allowing it to generate a lot of lift, which translates into increased speed. This lift allows the fin to maintain speed through dead spots on the wave. The strong HOLOFOILS featured on the inside face further assist in creating lift. The blade also has a slightly modified hollow foil that acts like a cup to create drive when pushed, enhancing the flex.

The smaller fins in the VTX series are designed to complement the main fins. The smallest one creates a split keel effect behind the VTX-500 fin. We call the two smallest back fins no-tip fins. Their role is to add drive to the whole setup without impeding the turning ability. Finally, a slightly larger back fin is similar in shape to the larger fins. It adds another level of versatility and dramatically improves the drive and hold of a quad setup.

All the fins in this series have narrow bases to maximize the turning ability.

K9 KAHI Series

One of the K9 series fins has been part of our production range for some time as part of the K9/PWR quad set.

Now, we are making a full range of these fins available by adding a smaller 4.00" version and a larger 5.00" one. We have already made a lot of the larger versions, so we know these fins are popular.

All of the fins in this series feature our KAHI cutaway, which significantly enhances the turning ability of these keel fins. Due to the rake on the leading edge, these fins provide excellent projection, making them ideal for fishes.

They all feature HOLOFOILS on the inside faces for increased performance and also to lighten the fins.

Compared to our regular KC keel fins, the shape of these fins was tweaked to allow them to fit on FUTURES bases. The regular keel fins have a base that is too long to fit.

WTF2 Series

One of the most unique fins in our range has been the WTF, which was only available as a molded fin. Now, we have updated the design so it can be custom-made.

The main changes from the original design were lengthening the blade slightly and narrowing the throat slightly to make it more wing-like. The original version had a double bend when viewed in profile. This revised design employs our BLENDED-WING concept to smooth out the fin, making it easier to produce.

Its improved flex allows it to spring back more in turns. As with the original, it features a narrow base for turning ability.

The WTF2-425 is the only size in this series. It is an excellent back fin for a quad setup and can be used with almost any of our larger front fins. It adds improved hold and extra drive to any quad setup. Some people like to use it as a canard fin in a twinzer or reverse quad setup, where it excels due to the BLENDED-WING.

It also makes for an excellent side fin in a 2PLUS1 setup.

KC Series

The KC series represents our original keel fin design exclusively geared towards fishes.

The overall outline is similar to many regular keel fins, except this series features a deep cutaway to improve turning. The inside faces feature our HOLOFOILS for improved performance.

The base on these fins is too long to fit on a FUTURES base, so we only offer them for GEARBOX and DUAL TAB. However, due to their large area, we firmly recommend not putting a DUAL TAB base on them, as they are more susceptible to breakage.

We also do a glass-on version that has no cutaway.

Color Choices

We have several different standard color panels for custom fins.

The color panel images below are taken from fiberglass panels, so they are as close as possible to represent the colors. Sometimes, we might be out of a specific color, so be prepared to have an alternate choice. The ordering system will show the in-stock colors.
